Poem pack (Flash version)

Requires the Flash 3 plugin. Html version also available (no plugin required).

Ten 'interactive poems' each featuring a different long vowel phoneme (-ee-, -ea-, -ay-, -ai-, -a-e-, -y-, -igh-, -i-e,-oa-, -oo-).

Each poem gives children practise with an individual phoneme through a range of activities:

Hear it - children hear the poem read by an actor and see the text highlight line by line.

Read it - having heard the poem, children read it out themselves.

Sound search - children locate and click the relevant long vowel phonemes from the poem text.

Find the word - a cloze activity that encourages reading for meaning. Children choose the correct word to fill gaps in poem lines.

Print it - offers a black and white print out of the poem and an activity sheet with a short framework to help children write a poem of their own.

Some of these printable activities combine a number of long vowel phonemes while others focus on individual phonemes.

Words and Pictures Scrapbook
Children print a front cover and a different scrapbook page each week. When all 10 pages are collected they can be stapled together to make a scrapbook. Each page features a different long vowel phoneme encouraging children to use word and picture clues to guess words and to draw or stick in their own pictures.

Silly sentences
There are 5 sheets of muddled sentences to sequence. Each sheet has 5 sentences which combine a range of long vowel phonemes and a space for children to make up their own.

Domino sounds
There are 2 sets of Dominoes with an accompanying rules sheet (which applies to both sets). These Domino rules encourage children to say the words or sounds out loud before they can make a match.
Each set combines 5 different long vowel phonemes.

Snails and Snakes
There are 2 board games each featuring 5 different phonemes. A accompanying sheet provides alternative rules so you can change the game to suit your needs.

Write your own poem
10 worksheets with a short framework to help children write a poem of their own that uses long vowel sounds (also available from the Poem Pack).

A timed game where children watch cards flip over and click Snap when they see a match. There are 2 levels of difficulty:
Level 1 Children match phonemes to words.
Level 2 Children match phonemes to words with the phoneme missing.

A timed game where children drag the correct long vowel phoneme into a gap in a word, (the timer can be adjusted to suit ability).
there are two levels of difficulty.
Level 1 - children use a picture clue to help them spell the word.
Level 2 - no picture clue, but children see the word flash up and disappear.

Using the games
These games may be used for independent work within the Literacy Hour, offering word level work relevant to these objectives from the NLS Framework for Key Stage 1, Year 1 Term 3:

Phonological awareness, phonics and spelling - the common spelling patterns for each of the long vowel phonemes:

Star Words

Star Words printout

Requires the Shockwave 7 plugin and a multimedia computer (ie with sound).

A new game to help develop sight recognition of 'high frequency' words. Can be configured to offer 10 specific words from the 200 identified in the NLS Framework for KS1.
Includes an optional printout sheet showing the player's progress in a given game.

Using the game
This game may be used for independent work within the Literacy Hour at Key Stage 1 and is relevant to this objective from the NLS Framework:

to read on sight high frequency words.

Children can submit their writing to the Gallery giving them opportunities to write for an audience.
Send us a sentence - children submit sentences that use words from any of their other activities.
Post up a poem - children submit a short poem that uses words from any of their other activities.
The 'Write your own poem' activity sheets from the Print and Do sections offer a framework to help with this.

Important note for entries
We would like to post as many pieces of children's work as possible. As work will be presented in a typed format (not the original) we can only include work that has been checked for spelling and grammatical errors. This ensures that readers are presented with correct models and provides incentive for young writers to complete the process of drafting and proof reading. Teachers can submit further details for pupils who are working to lower levels of attainment.
